Saint George is one of the best known Christian figure.

He was a Roman soldier famous for his bravery. He stood up against Christians being tortured.

According to a legend, he slaughtered a dragon in a town in Libya and resued the King's daughter. The townsfolk converted to Christianity. Saint George symbolizes the victory of the Christian faith over evil (the dragon).

He was chosen as the patron saint of England and his cross was adopted as the English flag. His red cross is part of the Union Jack too.

This is your homework for Friday, April 24th :

- Write Geronimo's biography (exercise 4 page 64 in your books) : underline all the passive forms and e-mail it.

Thank you to those who took part.
GERONIMO'S LIFE
Geronimo, or Goyathlay, was born in 1829. He was an Apache.
He was known for his incredible invulnerability and he was given the name of Geronimo.
When Geronimo and his people were removed from their lands, he rebelled.
He made the promise that his people would return to their lands, but the promise was never kept.
Geronimo was the leader of the last American Indian fighting force. Because he fought with extraordinary courage, he became the most famous Apache of all.
He died in 1909.

Buffalo Bill

William F. CODY was born in Iowa.

He was a US army scout, a buffalo hunter and an Indian fighter.

Thousands of buffaloes were killed by him during his lifetime that's why he was nicknamed Buffalo Bill.

He set the record : 4,280 buffaloes were massacred in 17 months only.

His living was made as a contract buffalo hunter.

He was a show man too. A show was produced by him with cowboy themes.

He died in 1917. His grave overlooks the Great Plains.

His life and his legend are illustrated in the Buffalo Bill Memorial Museum.

Exhibits about the Wild West shows are included in the museum.

Rusted Root is an American band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Rusted Root is famous for their fusion of  bluegrass rock with a strong percussion section that draws from Native American, Indian influences.

Rusted Root's Send me on my way which hit # 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 is its most commercially popular song.

It was used on the soundtracks of Matilda (see article published earlier on  MATILDA by Danny DeVito), the 1996 film Pie in the Sky and the film Race the Sun.

Send me on my way was used in another famous movie which was released in 2002 and which you've all seen, I'm sure.
What computer-animated film was it ?

"Little Bitty Pretty One" is a rock'n'roll song written and originally recorded by Bobby Day, and popularized by Thurston Harris in 1957. His version reached # 6 on the U.S.Billboard Hot 100.

It has most notably been covered by Frankie Lymon in 1958, Clyde McPhatter in 1962, the Jackson Five in 1972, Cliff Richard in 1983, Huey Lewis and the News in 1994, and Billy Gilman in 2000.

The song has also been covered by The Doobie Brothers and has become a crowd favourite at their shows.

The song has made appearances in ads, television and films, including the following:

  • A commercial for Lipton Green Iced Tea
  • The British television serial Lipstick on your collar.
  • The films Matilda by Danny DeVito (see article) , Christine (and its soundtrack), Corrine,Corrina, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
