First, Michael Blake wrote a book called
Dances with wolves in 1988. Then, in 1990 Kevin Costner, the famous American actor, turned the film into a huge cinema hit.

Dances with wolves is an epic film which tells the story of a United States Army lieutenant,
John J. Dunbar, who went in seach of the American frontier in 1864 and found himself. (see
webquest by Michelle Henry, J is for John Dunbar)
He eventually becomes friends with
a Sioux tribe and a lonely
wolf called " Socks".
The film which was both directed and produced by Kevin Costner, was released on November 9, 1990. It was nominated for 12 Oscars and won 7
Academy Awards and the
Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture. Much of the dialogue is in the
Lakota language with English subtitles, which was unusual for a film at the time of its release. It was shot in
South Dakota and
Wyoming.
