  What are these ?

These are Christmas crackers. Congrats Julia (8A)! Inside there is a paper crown (tissue party hat), a motto (British joke or riddle), a snap (popping device), and a small present.

Crackers are used to decorate tables at dinners and parties.

The inventor was Tom Smith, a baker of wedding cakes from  London. He invented Christmas crackers in 1847.
