Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May in the USA.
Formerly known as
Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.
First enacted to honour Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.
Memorial Day is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country.
The gravestones at Alington National Cemetery are graced by U.S. flags on Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a holiday and a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer.
